Americans are expected to spend more heating their homes this winter than last year, which could be another weight on the fragile economy.

Families who use natural gas to heat homes — 55% of all households — will see their winter heating bills go up 17% to an average of $700 even though inventories are high, the Energy Department says. Electricity costs are estimated to go up 12%, and heating-oil costs are expected to rise 42% in the October-to-March heating period.
